The Goombay Smash for Society Social

goombay smash in pineapple

Spring break is here and even though I'm anxiously awaiting baby boy's arrival, that hasn't stopped me from daydreaming about sunny beaches and tropical libations! I mixed up this pineapple dream over at Society Social after my friends at Captain Morgan sent me a few of their newest flavors, including coconut rum, grapefruit rum and pineapple rum. Just like that,  the Goombay Smash was born and thankfully Mr. Southern Peach was a very willing taste tester. He gave it two thumbs up and declared it scRUMptious. Click over to Society Social and grab the Goombay Smash recipe pronto!

Happy Spring Breaking fellow peaches!

The Weekend Cheers: Skinny Beach Bum

peach cocktail with pineapple coconut garnish

This cocktail has been on solid rotation all summer, particularly at the beach a few weeks ago, hence the name of this drink. I loooove the Smirnoff Sorbet Light Pineapple Coconut Vodka! Have you tried it yet? If not, RUN to the liquor store around the corner and pick up a bottle for the weekend. It's also low-cal...awesome!! To make the shredded coconut stick to the side of the glass, simply dip the rim in a little honey and you've got a delicious garnish. Cheers to the weekend fellow peaches! Hope it's a good one.

// Ingredients //

1.5 oz. Smirnoff Sorbet Light Pineapple Coconut Vodka
2 oz. Grapefruit Juice
Shredded sweetened coconut, honey and a pineapple wedge for garnish

Strawberry-Watermelon Infused Water

strawberry-watermelon-water-drink

We're slowly adjusting to our new school routine but I refuse to toss summer aside. This strawberry watermelon infused water was just the ticket to lift my spirits and hold onto the season a little longer. One sip of this drink and I knew summer was here to stay for a little while longer. And the sweet watermelon and tart strawberries balance each other perfectly!

Infused waters are a great way to consume beneficial vitamins without a ton of extra calories.  Watermelon is full of antioxidants and amino acids while strawberries are a Vitamin C powerhouse. Did you know watermelon may even assist with soothing sore muscles? With most of my infused water recipes, I try to squeeze a little lemon in for the detoxifying effects. Feel free to get creative with your infused waters and use whatever you have laying around or growing in your summer garden!

***** Strawberry Watermelon Infused Water *****

// Ingredients //

1 cup strawberries, stems removed
1 cup watermelon, cubed
Juice of half a lemon
32 oz. water

// Instructions //

1. In a blender, combine strawberries, watermelon and lemon juice. Puree until smoother. Then, pour juice through fine mesh strainer to remove pulp and seeds. (You may have to use the back of a spoon to work it through.) You should have about 1/2 cup of fruit juice.

2. Add fruit juice to 32 ounces of water and chill. When ready to serve, pour over ice and leftover fresh fruit.

The Weekend Cheers: Summer Rosé

Suffice to say, I love my cocktails but some days beckon for a glass of wine.  In early June, I read this WSJ article on rosé wine which convinced me to expand my wine selections and summer hasn't been the same since. There's a whole new world out there!  (But I tend to favor the French regions). And if you're wondering what makes rosé superior to white zinfandel, here's a quick read to get you in the know.

Are you a rosé drinker? If so, send me your favorites, pretty please. I love to curl up in this spot at the end of the day and enjoy a nice glass. Summer is far from over and the weekend is just beginning. Cheers to all my fellow peaches!

Weekend Cheers: Five Summer Cocktails

Happy Friday fellow peaches! With the weekend upon us and school coming to a close, I can smell summer already. I'm so ready for a little reprise from schedules and school work. I've been looking back through my long list of cocktail recipes, dreaming of which ones will grace my lips this summer. Here are five of my all-time favorite summer cocktails! Feel free to pin them, mix them, drink them and share them!

Enjoy the weekend!

Skinny Aloe Margarita

skinny aloe margarita

Happy Friday fellow peaches! Who's ready to kick back this weekend, watch the derby and indulge in some margaritas for Cinco de Mayo? The last few weeks have been so crazy as the the end of the school year approaches. It's full of projects, tests, volunteer opportunities, parties and much, much more. I've also made a conscious effort to take better care of myself which means more time at the gym and more sleep. Happy to say it's paid off and the pants are already a little looser!

However, if there's one guilty pleasure I don't want to give up, it's my Friday night margarita. After reading that Gisele Bundchen had experimented with aloe juice in Food and Wine magazine, I bravely mixed up this skinny aloe margarita which is absolutely out of this world! I was shocked at how closely these tasted like the "real thing"despite aloe juice having ZERO sugar in it!

When shopping for aloe juice, be sure to purchase a brand that is aloin free.  I only drink Lakewood organic pure aloe juice which I find at my local Publix in the juice aisle. If you're watching your figure and your sugar intake, this aloe margarita is a must try. If you try it and love it, let me know! I'd love to hear your feedback.

***** Skinny Aloe Margarita *****

// Ingredients //

1 oz. pure agave blanco tequila
1/2 oz. orange liquor
1 oz. Lakewood organic pure aloe juice
the juice of one lime
1 teaspoon of agave nectar

// Instructions //

Combine ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Salt the rim of a glass, add ice and strain mix into glass.

Masters Party Food

EGG SALAD SANDWICH - click here for recipe

arnold palmer drink and masters party food

As promised, here's a roundup of my favorite recipes for your Masters viewing party. In addition to these yummy items, we also have lots of Lay's potato chips on hand which is what ANGC serves. It's one of the few times we have an abundance of white bread and potato chips in our house because I have zero self control when it comes to these matters. Our Masters "party" consists of the kids playing wiffle ball in the backyard while the men are glued to the TV. My sister, mom and I are usually bouncing between the backyard, the kitchen and the golf tournament. We keep it simple. After all, it is a Sunday.

I'd love to know if you plan on watching the Masters and if so, who would you like to see win?

Skinny Pineapple Cocktail on Society Social

Did you see this skinny pineapple cocktail I mixed up for Society Social? Spring is officially here and I'm putting the finishing touches on my Home Depot Style Challenge. With the boys home for spring break, I'm really having to manage my time wisely. I'm looking forward to a relaxing this weekend and kicking my feet up under the porch fan with one of these lovely drinks. Grab the recipe at Society Social which includes detailed instructions on how to make those gorgeous dried pineapple flowers for the perfect spring garnish!

Weekend Cheers: Spring Slim Down

Happy Friday! I know I was quiet here on the blog this week, but do not let that fool you. On Wednesday, I celebrated another birthday and am still hard at work on the Home Depot style challenge. The boys started baseball so that is consuming a lot of our Saturdays. I've also decided I must shut down my computer at a decent hour each night. It's difficult for me because I'm naturally a night owl but I'm realizing (with age) how important sleep really is when it comes to my daytime productivity. I also see a HUGE difference in my skin when I get more rest. It's not called beauty rest for nothing!

I mixed up the above elixir in an effort to brighten my skin and boost my metabolism for spring. I've always loved infusing my water but I specifically chose the ingredients for this recipe to be healing and detoxifying. Did you know cinnamon is believed to curb sugar cravings and lemon is a well known detoxifier, which means less swelling! For me personally, mint is a natural mood lifter and great for my sinuses and since allergy and pollen season is in full force here in Georgia, you better bet I'm stocking my garden with this stuff. For best results with this all-natural slim down drink, mix up a large batch each morning and sip it throughout the day. I recommend repeating this for 2-3 days in a row or until you feel the benefits. Three cheers for spring and feeling our best!

****Cinnamon-Lemon Slim Down Drink*****

//Ingredients//

32 oz. filtered cold water
1 lemon
1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon*
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
Mint leaves for garnish

//Instructions//

In a large pitcher, combine water, the juice of one lemon, cinnamon and vanilla extract. Stir well until cinnamon is combined. Pour over ice and garnish with fresh mint leaves. Refrigerate as necessary.

Cinna-sugar White Hot Chocolate

So we're just a few weeks into the official winter season and Atlanta saw some brutally cold temperatures this week.  Getting back into the routine of school and work was difficult enough but these freezing temps made facing the world a little more daunting. Luckily though, we're all healthy again and I'm finally feeling well enough to experiment with some new spirits. I've been anxious to try the new Smirnoff Cinna-sugar Vodka so what better way than to mix it up in a warm chocolaty cocktail? Let me say now that you will be in winter wonderland heaven while sipping on this Cinna-sugar White Hot Chocolate. It is perfection! The only thing missing was a roaring fire but the weekend is still young and there's plenty of time to recreate the moment.

Captain's Table: Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with Hot Buttered Rum Apples // Spiced Almond Coquito

I'm so excited to share Part 2 of the Captain's Table challenge with y'all today. This month we created recipes centered around the holiday season. My family celebrates Christmas and part of that always includes pancakes for breakfast on Christmas morning, a tradition started by my father-in-law. Typically we opt for old-fashioned blueberry pancakes but today I'm sharing a recipe for lemon ricotta panckaes covered with hot buttered rum apples. Y'all it is amazing good!  And I love the addition of ricotta because it helps the pancakes stick to your ribs long enough for you to tear through your Christmas morning gift exchange. For the cocktail recipe, I used my classic coquito recipe as a jumping off point and spiced it up a bit.  I would happily skip the eggnog and sip a coquito on Christmas morning!  I like it that much but I'll let you guys try out the recipe and see for yourself! I can't think of a better way to start Christmas day than this breakfast combination. And remember, each time you pin or share this post and use the hashtag #captainstable, Captain Morgan will donate to WhyHunger.

Captain's Table: Mini Rum Pumpkin Pies & Washington's Rum Punch

Happy weekend friends. Have you recovered from Thanksgiving? I spent the day with loved ones and had originally planned for a smaller than usual group, but good news travels fast and we ended up celebrating with a party of seventeen! I've come to the conclusion that if you don't have at least one extra table set up for Thanksgiving, you haven't invited enough people.

Today I'm sharing two recipes for the Captain's Table Challenge, my Mini Rum Pumpkin Pies with Spiced Orange Whipped Cream and Washington's Rum Punch. Do you really need much more to celebrate Thanksgiving? I would say no. Before I share the details, can I just say that I love using canning jars when entertaining a large group? They're versatile, inexpensive and can be stored easily in their original packaging. Both of these recipes were inspired by a rustic Thanksgiving feast where guests can easily help themselves at their leisure.  The small portions make them the perfect after dinner treat! The Mini Rum Pumpkin Pies are twist on a traditional favorite while Washington's Rum Punch is a nod to one of the founding fathers.

Captain's Table Challenge

Happy Friday friends! Usually I post a fun, hand-crafted cocktail recipe for you on Fridays but today I'm sharing a fun challenge with you. One of the main reasons I began this blog was to challenge myself creatively so when the Captain Morgan brand recently invited me to participate in their Captain's Table challenge, I gladly accepted.

Here's how it will work. Over the next several weeks I will dream up one fabulous cocktail recipe and one decadent food recipe for Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Super Bowl. Naturally these recipes will include the Captain Morgan brand and needless to say, I'm going to have a glorious time taste testing!

After the recipes are shared here, two things will happen. First, they will be judged by Hugh Acheson, a local Georgia favorite no doubt!  I'll be competing against 15 other blogger for a chance to win cash prizes with an additional grand prize trip to the Captain's Table US event in the spring where the winner will be joined by Hugh himself.

Secondly, and more importantly, Captain Morgan will donate $1 to the WhyHunger charity every time the hashtag #CaptainsTable is used across social media this holiday season. So if you see me obsessively using this hashtag, please know that I'm not just promoting my blog and the brand but also raising money for this wonderful charity.

There's just one last thing...I'm inviting you along for the ride. Share your own recipes and entertaining tips with the hashtag #CaptainsTable to help fight hunger too!

Wish me luck and happy weekend fellow peaches.

*Full Disclosure: Captain Morgan provided me with product samples, a bar tool set and a cash gift card to shop and prepare my recipes. Thank you Captain Morgan for the invitation.

Southern Living Feature

I'm having a complete pinch me moment here. If you haven't heard yet, my ambrosia cocktail and the blog is featured in the latest issue of Southern Living! Any other fans out there? I've been reading SL since I was a teenager and it's always been a dream of mine to grace the pages. So when a food editor contacted me this summer about the opportunity, I jumped at it like any southern woman would. The December issue has always been my favorite and this one is no exception. The double issue is packed with holiday inspiration and is nothing short of stunning. If you want to find me in all those lovely pages, you'll see my humble little feature on page 16 in the Community Cookbook. And of course, you can grab my ambrosia cocktail here on the blog too. If your copy hasn't already showed up in your mailbox, you can grab a copy on newsstands now. Hope y'all have a great weekend and thank you for visiting and reading. I am grateful.

Five Bourbons for Fall

'
Tailgating season and fall temperatures seem to demand a good bourbon drink. I'm not a huge bourbon drinker unless there's a roaring fire and snow on the ground but Mr. Southern Peach keeps our bar stocked with his favorites year round. I asked my southern gent to help me round up a list to share with y'all for the approaching fall season. While he'll likely drink these mixed with a little Coca-Cola, I'm dreaming of spiking the apple cider and the eggnog. Have any of you bourbon drinkers tried these ice spheres? I'm thinking of picking up a few to surprise Mr. YSP for his birthday.

Cheers to the weekend!

The Weekend Cheers: The Pepino

I'm in awe of September already. It arrived in warp speed and our blooming apple tree in the backyard has me anxiously awaiting fall's arrival. But before we say goodbye to summer, I had to share my all time favorite cocktail that I mixed up this season. Let me introduce you to the Pepino. I mixed this up a few weeks ago during dinner with friends and it did not disappoint. You know the cocktails are good when the men ditch their bourbon to partake!  It's no wonder this hot celebrity dubbed the Pepino one of his favorite drinks too. Think of this tequila mixer as the sophisticated cousin of the margarita. It's effortlessly cool, uber chic and a nod to the lingering summer garden. Cin cin y'all!

***** THE PEPINO *****

// INGREDIENTS //

1.5 silver tequila
1/2 oz. orange flavor liquor
1/4 inch cucumber peeled, seeded and diced
1/4 oz. agave nectar
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. pineapple juice
3 basil leaves

// INSTRUCTIONS //

1. In the bottom of a glass, muddle cucumber.
2. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine tequila, orange liquor, agave nectar, lime juice, pineapple juice and basil leaves. Stir gently.
3. Top muddled cucumbers with ice and strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the glass.

Sip and enjoy!

Weekend Cheers with Madhouse

Who's ready for a holiday weekend? I'm completely prepared to spend the next few days soaking up the long weekend. I think a visit to the pool and a few cocktails are definitely in order.   The spread you see above is brought to you courtesy of my friends at Madhouse, a line of upscale, but affordable dinnerware and serverware collection designed by Michael Aram. Those gorgeous glasses up there are actually melamine! Can you believe it? Perfect for poolside imbibing and porch dining. They have a great weight to them which means a gust of wind isn't likely to take out your gin and tonic.  The fun print on the paper products and melamine tray is their Lemonwood collection which I think is uber chic. I also like the Fig Leaf pattern seen here which I've set aside for fall entertaining. A big thanks to Madhouse for sharing their practical and inspiring pieces for entertaining with style. Cheers to the weekend

Weekend Cheers: Honey Lemonade Cocktail

Summertime isn't quite over and I've got the perfect cocktail for you to celebrate with this weekend. Lemonade is such a versatile mixer when it comes to summer drinks but this spiced rum combination is one of my favorites. And, if you've never experienced honey sticks, I highly recommend them for cocktails! They eliminate a lot of mess and add just the right touch of flavor. You can order Honeystix here and they come in a variety of flavors. They're also great in teas or to relieve sore throat. This honey lemonade cocktail makes a good transitional drink as we approach fall so keep this one around for a while. Cin cin y'all!

***** Honey Lemonade Cocktail *****

1 oz. spiced rum (I like Captain Morgan)
3 oz. lemonade
1 Honeystix, ends trimmed
Lemons for garnish

***** Mix It *****

Pour rum over ice. Then add lemonade and stir. Add honey stick and lemon slices and enjoy!

*I received no compensation from Honeystix or Captain Morgan for this post. I just really love them both! Captain Morgan did kindly supply me with a variety of rums to sample this summer which create awesome cocktails to share with you!
