Salted Melon

Hello there!  We're fresh off a three day holiday weekend and I'm not gonna pretend I didn't indulge in a few burgers and cocktails.  But I did manage to slice up some fresh cantaloupe which was oh so yummy.

Here's a question for you.  Do you salt your melon?  Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Honeydew?

I believe this is more of a Southern thing but perhaps I am wrong? I was first introduced to salted melon about ten years ago while eating lunch with a colleague who was surprised I had never heard of such a thing.  Of course I tried a bite and loved it!  The mix of sweet and salty is right up my alley and really brings out the flavor and juices of the fruit.

So, tell me...what's your preference?

  1. We've been eating a ton of cantaloupe here at the beach and just had a conversation about salting it. I do not salt it, but my father-in-law and his father do!

  2. Eek! I saw the title of this post and cringed. I can't stand salt on my melon! My grandmother used to say it made it better, and as soon as I would turn my head, she'd sprinkle a little salt on mine! I definitely think it's a very personal taste. :)

  3. haha this is so funny because I totally salt my melon but learned it from my grandpa - who lives in Memphis! So I think you're right, it is a southern thing but I'm representing it in the Pacific Northwest! (If you can't tell by most of my comments on your blog I am a big fan of the south!) :)

  4. I had never heard or even thought about salting fruit until my boyfriend introducted it to me. He salts about anything: apples, oranges, lemons, watermelon... if the salt shaker is around he will pour it on. I even indulge in a salted piece once in a while and love it. I don't live in the South... I live in Wisconsin... so not just a Southern thing. But I sure enjoy reading your blog!
