A Southern New Year's Meal

Hello friends!  I hope you're enjoying 2011.  Does that sound strange to anyone else?  It makes 1999 sound colossal.  We started the new year with a a traditional Southern meal of greens, black eyed peas, Honeybaked Ham and some homemade cheddar-jalapeno cornbread.  We also had a delicious cabbage casserole compliments of our sweet friends who joined us for dinner.

So far, we've already had some firsts for 2011. This was our first time making our own greens and we opted to use a recipe from the Mary Mac's Tea Room cookbook.  The greens were a bit labor intensive but my husband, who I referred to as "Mr. Southern Peach" while he manned the stove, did a great job!  I also got a chance to cook in my new cast iron skillet for the first time! Apparently a friend of mine thought it was about time I succumb to this southern tradition so she snuck one under my Christmas tree and I have been chomping at the bit to break it in ever since.

It really felt good to begin the new year with a traditional meal shared with family and friends.  I can only hope that 2011 is filled with even more memories and sweet southern traditions!

  1. I always feel like I have to break in a new kitchen item as soon as I can even if it is something I didn't realize I needed.
