So in the interest of keeping summer interesting for me and the kiddos, we went downtown last week for our first visit to The Varsity but only after dragging my husband away from his office for the monumental lunch break. The Varsity is an experience to be had, let me tell you. It was hustle and bustle from the moment we stepped in the door.
On the drive into town, Luke and I practiced our order in the car anticipating the famous lingo from the staff who quickly asks customers, "What'll ya have? What'll ya have?" and urges them to "Have your order in your mind and your money in your hand!" We weren't shy while ordering and went for the full monty as you can see.
The best onion rings known to man or woman...
I am amazed at the volume of food that is made each day:
"Two miles of hot dogs, a ton of onions, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 5000 fried pies and 300 gallons of chili are made from scratch daily."
Everything was great but we certainly had our favorites!
I visited The Varsity when I was in college. One of my roommates was from Atlanta so I was lucky enough to have her show me around. The Varsity was wonderful! The food was simply amazing... Looks like your family enjoyed it too!
ReplyDeleteMy husband grew up in Atlanta, and most of my family lives just outside in Newnan. It's shameful, but I've never been there myself-ha! My husband does say "What'll ya have? What'll ya have?" all the time! Now that we live in DC, I feel like everything around is famous. We are always going somewhere new and trying to experience all it has to offer, but never seem to get it all in. I guess that's a good thing though.
ReplyDeleteUgh!I'm salivating at my desk just looking at those onion rings.Yum! I love the Varsity's Hot Wings.
ReplyDeleteI think I saw this place on the Food Network once - it looks sooooo yummy!
ReplyDeleteSay what? You'd never been to The Varsity before? Lord, if i had a nickel for every time i've eaten at that grease pit before heading to UGA & Braves games with my Dad. They do indeed had the best onion rings on earth. And i'm pretty sure The Varsity is the largest buyer of Lipton Ice Tea Bags in the country. Good stuff! Glad you're raisin' your kids right ;)
ReplyDeleteI love those Orange drinks!!!!! Thank you Amy!!!! Love this post.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to The Flying Biscuit or Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles. One place I do love is Mary Mac's. Delish!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you lived in Atlanta most of your life and hadn't been to the Varsity! I grew up with Athens as a second home and made MANY trips to the Varsity there. The food is so sinfully yummy!
ReplyDeleteI use to work at Crawford Long Hospital and we had a "chef" come in from the Varsity and he had body jam..it is like toe jam but in other places. It kept me from every going back to get a dog.
